“i have really enjoyed doing the anxiety course with sally. I have learnt so much about what anxiety actually is and now have a wonderful structure to my day which has no place for anxious thoughts. I feel completely in control of my life and am looking forward to the future. ”
what is anxiety?
anxiety is a feeling of unease.
Everybody experiences it when faced with a stressful situation; for example before an exam or an interview, or during a worrying time such as illness. It is normal to feel anxious when facing something difficult or dangerous and mild anxiety can be a positive and useful experience. However, for one in ten people in the
uk, anxiety interferes with normal life. Excessive anxiety is often associated with othe
r psychiatric conditions, such as depression. Anxiety is considered abnormal when:
it is very prolonged or severe
it happens in the
absence of a stressful event
it is interfering with everyday activities such as going to work or socialising.
Unsurprisingly the past two and a half years have seen anxiety levels rocket. The onset and impact of covid-19 with the resultant restrictions, lockdowns, redundancies, illness, and fatalities left most people more anxious and uncertain about the future. Even the most resilient of individuals could not have failed to be impacted in some way by the coronavirus. However, aside from the impact of covid-19 , anxiety levels in the uk are now rising again due to the financial and political instability, cost of living crisis, rising inflation, war in ukraine, the negative impacts of brexit, industrial unrest, threat of job losses, onset of winter.
