Its developers originally called it amygdala repotentiation therapy because they believed it changed how the amygdala of the brain processes emotions. They claimed the technique creates an internal safe haven, allowing a person to reprocess and eventually escape emotional and physical pain. However, havening is a new alternative therapy, and there is very little research testing its effectiveness. While some studies suggest it may help with pain and anxiety, well-designed placebo-controlled trials have not proven that it works. A person can self-haven, which means they perform the technique on themselves, or seek havening therapy from a trained practitioner. 17march 2020 text laura pitcher last month, hailey bieber shared with the world that her husband justin bieber practices the havening technique regularly on an episode of the singer’s youtube docuseries, justin bieber: seasons. She describes it as “almost like when you’re a kid and your mum is rubbing your back to sleep and it’s the best feeling in the world”, taking anywhere from a few minutes to hours. Taught to bieber by his health coach dr buzz mingin, it seems justin turns to self-havening (practising the method on yourself) for anxiety management. He’s not alone. Belonging to a larger group of methods called psychosensory therapies, such as the wider known tapping technique (an emotional freedom technique that involves tapping on different parts of the body), havening uses physical touch as a “therapeutic tool”, applying the technique by rubbing certain points on the body (hands, arms, forehead, and under eyes) slowly and with moderate pressure.
There isn’t much research on the havening technique. Small studies show that the method can be effective in lessening anxiety and depression symptoms. That said, there aren’t any highly controlled and long-term studies on the subject—so any claims made about it should be taken with a grain of salt. In general, the method is fine for most people to try, but don’t use it as a replacement for other forms of therapy or medication. A study conducted in 2015 evaluated 27 people who reported having anxiety or depression levels affecting them in the workplace. Participants in the study reported a decrease in these symptoms.

Havening, is an alternative therapy developed by ronald ruden and his brother steve ruden; it relies on "amygdala depotentiation" that purportedly can help people with psychological problems, particularly those related to phobias, post-traumatic stress and anxiety. “havening, the transitive verb of the word haven, means to put into a safe place. ” "havening touch" is claimed to elicit delta brain waves and to act directly on receptors in the brain where trauma is believed to be stored, to down regulate the emotional charge, mostly while the client is distracted. This means the client does not have to stay in, or talk about, upsetting events or feelings.
Ronald discovered that when you repeatedly touch certain parts of the body, pairing them with specific eye movements and visualizations , it produces massive amounts of delta brainwaves in the brain. As a result, you feel calm, relaxed, and less stressed. His work is now known as psychosensory therapy — alternative therapy for reducing anxiety and stress associated with traumatic memories. Paul mckenna, who’s also the trainer of mindvalley’s everyday bliss quest, teaches this technique to his clients to help them manage daily stress, become more resilient in life, and overcome emotional issues linked to traumatic experiences. Paul explains that this technique uses touch patterns that can even enable a mother to comfort her baby, so they are hard-wired into every infant.
Kate truitt, a clinical psychologist who is a certified trainer for havening, works out of los angeles and has been a proponent of the technique since 2014. After experiencing a severe trauma five years ago, she went to a havening workshop in new york city and found that within minutes she was feeling better. According to truitt, havening focuses on exploring how trauma is encoded in the amygdala, the part of the brain that experiences emotions. "in a moment of trauma encoding, the brain goes into what's called a hyper gamma wave start, which allows the amgydala, our survivor brain, to basically latch like super glue onto a traumatic experience and say 'i'm remembering this forever, because this threatened my life,'" explained truitt.

We will first chat about the situation you would like to change, and see whether havening can help. Once we agree to work together, the painful memory is briefly activated, gentle touch is applied to the hands, arms and face and distraction exercises are used. This creates the necessary conditions in the brain to remove the receptors that trigger distressing emotions and physical content of a trauma-based memory. If you don’t feel comfortable disclosing some the content of an event, i do not need to know all the details. Take-away: you can be shown how to do self-havening at home whenever required.
