18. Living a Life of Wisdom Instead of Foolishness

Author haddon w. Robinson in his foreword to robert l. Alden’s book proverbs: a commentary on an ancient book of timeless advice states: “men and women educated to earn a living often don’t know anything about handling life itself. Alumni from noted universities have mastered information about a narrow slice of life but couldn’t make it out of the first grade when it comes to living successfully with family and friends. Let’s face it. Knowledge is not enough to meet life’s problems. We need wisdom, the ability to handle life with skill” (p. conflict 7). Consider also these words of wisdom: “wisdom never comes to those who believe they have nothing left to learn” (charles de lint).

The fear of the lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Read more this is the core maxim of the book: the quest for wisdom begins with the fear of the lord (cf. Ps. 9:10 and ps. 111:10, “the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom”). “knowledge” and “wisdom” are closely tied together in proverbs: “knowledge” tends to focus on correct understanding of the world and oneself as creatures of the magnificent and loving god, while “wisdom” is the acquired skill of applying that knowledge rightly, or “skill in the art of godly living”. On the fear of the lord, see notes on acts 5:5; 9:31; rom.

Proverbs 16:16 says, “how much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!” the bible urges us often to seek wisdom above all things (e. G. , proverbs 4:7). But there are different kinds of wisdom. First corinthians 3:19 says, “for the wisdom of this world is foolishness in god’s sight. ” and verse 20 says, “the lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile. ” there is obviously a difference between godly wisdom and worldly wisdom (see james 3:13–17). Godly wisdom is, of course, from god and honors god. Godly wisdom starts with the fear of god and results in a holy life.

What is the meaning of life? this is one of the most existential questions we all ask at some time in our lives. All people desire to find meaning and create value for their lives. But as believers and followers of christ, we do not want just any meaning for life, we want god’s meaning for our lives. So we turn to scripture for answers. In this groundwork series we dig into the book of ecclesiastes to discover biblical wisdom about life and how we can live meaningful lives that are more than just chasing the wind.

Blessed is the one who seeks wisdom, and the many bible verses about wisdom teaches us that it’s more valuable than gold. Wisdom and understanding are two different things. If we say that understanding is knowledge based, than wisdom is applying that knowledge through making right decisions. It’s the key to living the abundant life god promises his children. As james says here, “good life”. Wisdom means making those right decisions about what we put in our minds, put in our mouths, and how we treat our bodies. Sometimes it’s way too easy to ignore the things we know we should do.

Believers Live a Life of Wisdom by Being Filled with the Spirit

We are to conquer the trials in life with god’s mind, using his wisdom, thereby solving problems with god. We have access to the mind of christ (proverbs 2:2-6; 1 corinthians 2:13-16). Being filled with the holy spirit also means receiving wisdom. The knowledge of the lord brings wisdom. Reading the word brings the knowledge of god, and meditating upon that knowledge brings wisdom as we allow the holy spirit to bring revelation and show us how to apply it in our lives. Wisdom is knowledge applied. Reading and meditating on the word renews our mind (romans 12:2; 2 timothy 2:15), reveals truth (john 8:32), and allows us to tap into the wisdom of god (1 corinthians 2:6-10).

“stay alert! watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. ” –1 peter 5:8 the enemy will do his best to confuse you about following god’s wisdom by reminding you of past mistakes or competing options. Therefore, it’s necessary to get quiet before the lord by spending time in bible study and prayer. When the enemy comes at you with condemnation for past mistakes or confusion because the lord is leading you in an unconventional direction, use the word to combat him. It’s also wise to speak with trusted, mature believers, possibly a pastor at your church, small group leader or a spiritual mentor.
